Yesterday I had my final meeting with my coach having started our partnership some 5 months ago. I arrived early for the first time. It was also the first time that I chose the table and chairs. I reviewed the lunch menu well ahead of my coach arriving and I had my documents ready before we got started.
I’ve travelled a long way for these meetings. I’ve not been very comfortable with the roads and have been lost a few times! Even though we could have done phone coaching, I felt compelled to meet in person. Face to face communication feels more real to me. I know my facial expressions help the other person understand where I’m at; my vulnerability shows as does my delight and excitement! More can be gleaned… clarified, then understood.
Half way through our meeting yesterday I was asked a series of questions to make sure that our time together had achieved what I’d hoped it would. As I answered the first question, my coach asked me another one. As I answered the second question, she asked me a third. At that point I realised I still had more to say about the first question! It was easy for me to say, ‘I’d just like to go back to that first question for a minute – there is something else I want to share.’
It was easy because
1. I had developed a trusting relationship with this person
2. We were partnering for defined goal achievement
3. She was listening to and observing me carefully
4. We both wanted success & growth
I’ve realised something. I’ve just grown up a little bit!
I felt totally comfortable taking control of the conversation yesterday, changing its direction and pace so that we could both have a great outcome. I truly believe that yesterday we danced together a pretty fine tango. I couldn’t have done it without my coach…and she couldn’t have been on the dance floor without me!
